Our Programs #DontHideMe

#DontHideMe & Safe Surgical Aid (SSAID) deliver high-impact, community-driven programs that combine medical outreach, legal identity restoration, therapeutic support, caregiver empowerment, and policy advocacy to ensure children with developmental disabilities are seen, supported, and fully included.

Inaugural Nairobi Event – 16 December 2023

Awareness Campaign

The official launch of the #DontHideMe movement at a high-profile gathering in Nairobi. Families, advocates, government officials, and partners came together to sign a public declaration committing to acceptance, understanding, and inclusion for children with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental disabilities. Impact: Marked the birth of a national campaign inspired by Najma Ahmed’s son Abdullahi. It established the movement’s core message — “From Silence to Visibility” — and laid the foundation for all subsequent medical camps and policy work.

Garissa 1st Anniversary Medical Camp

12–14 December 2024

Hosted at Garissa Special School in partnership with Hon. Maj. (Rtd) Dekow Barrow (MP Garissa Township), KISE, NCPWD, Northern Advocacy Organisation, and Boyne Healthcare. Key Stats & Highlights:

  • Over 200 consultations, assessments, and therapy sessions on Day 1 alone (KISE therapists + Garissa County specialists)
  • NCPWD disability registrations and SHA/SHIF enrollments on site
  • Vision, hearing, and developmental assessments
  • Public awareness sessions and stakeholder dialogue Milestone Outcome: Produced the historic Joint Declaration calling for the nationwide renaming of special schools and establishment of school-based health centres. This directly fed into the Ministry of Education’s national policy change in 2025.

Wajir 2nd Anniversary Campaign

13–15 June 2025

Held at Wajir Special School under the theme “No Longer Hidden: A Call to Serve Every Child”. Chief Guest: H.E. FCPA Ahmed Abdullahi, Governor of Wajir & Chairperson, Council of Governors. Fully funded by Hon. Adan Daud Mohamed (MP Wajir East). Key Stats:

  • 684 children with developmental disabilities served with medical, therapeutic, and psychosocial support
  • 556 individuals assessed by Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) for visual/hearing impairment, autism, intellectual disabilities, etc.
  • 142 birth certificates issued (Civil Registration Services)
  • 182 children registered with NCPWD (138 in one report; 182 total across partners)
  • 63 assistive devices enlisted for distribution
  • 700 dignity/food packages distributed to mothers and caregivers Major Pledges:
  • Governor pledged therapy centres in every sub-county hospital
  • MP Hon. Adan Daud Mohamed committed KSh 20 million (above CDF) for special needs schools Partners: KISE, NCPWD, Kenya Red Cross, Wajir County Government, SHA, CRS, DirectAid, i-FLY AIR, i-MALL, Office of MP Wajir East.

Mandera 4th Edition (Mandera Mission 2025)

9–13 December 2025

Held at Mandera Special School for the Blind — the largest and most comprehensive camp to date. Key Stats:

  • 755 persons with disabilities served (surpassing initial target of 500; one report notes over 780 total beneficiaries)
  • 240 disability certificates issued (NCPWD)
  • 76 birth certificates issued (Civil Registration Services)
  • Comprehensive physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vision & hearing assessments (including audiology machine — first time in the region)
  • School placements, SHA enrollments, and food assistance Outcome: Exposed the urgent need for a permanent rehabilitation and therapy centre in Mandera County. High-level participation: Deputy Governor Dr. Ali Mohamud and several national leaders.

Other Past Programs & Initiatives

Kwale Field & Fun Day – June 2025 Fundraising and family fun event targeting KSh 750,000 for infrastructure and therapeutic equipment at Kwale School of Mentally Handicapped.

Pwani School Sensory Room Upgrades – 2025 Targeted fundraising of KSh 300,000 to equip and upgrade sensory development rooms at Pwani School for the Mentally Challenged (Nyali, Mombasa).

Kilifi Water Wells Project – May 2024 Installed two vital community water wells to improve access to clean water for families of children with disabilities and surrounding villages.

Ramadan Iftar & Feeding Program – 2025 Fed 200 vulnerable families in Maji Ya Chumvi, combining dignity packages with awareness messaging.

Policy & Systemic Milestones

National Terminology Reform – October 2025 Following SSAID’s formal letter to the Principal Secretary, Ministry of Education (11 September 2025), the Ministry issued a nationwide circular on 7 October 2025 (Ref: MOE.HQS/3/6/67) directing all schools and education offices to immediately replace stigmatizing terms such as “mentally handicapped” with respectful, person-first language: “Schools for Learners with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities” All signage, records, and materials to be updated by 30 June 2026. This is a direct victory of the #DontHideMe campaign.

Ministry of Health High-Level Engagement – 3 February 2026 Principal Secretary for Public Health & Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, hosted a delegation led by Mohamed Dayow. Discussions focused on early identification, rehabilitation, therapy services, and referral pathways in underserved northern regions.

Serena Hotel Partners Dinner – 2025 High-profile gathering of Deputy Governors, Members of Parliament (Garissa, Mandera East, Wajir East), PSs, NCPWD CEO, and key partners to strengthen long-term collaboration and resource mobilization.

The #DontHideMe movement was born from the personal experience of our founder, Najma Osman, a mother raising her son, Abdullahi, who has Down Syndrome. Inspired by his courage, Najma launched the campaign to move children from the shadows into a life of dignity and opportunity.
