Our Story: A Mother’s Courage, A Son’s Light

The #DontHideMe movement is not just an initiative; it is a heartfelt response to a profound personal journey. Our founder, Najma Osman, knows first-hand the joys and challenges of raising a child with special needs. Her son, Abdullahi, who lives with Down Syndrome, is the heartbeat of this campaign.

Witnessing Abdullahi’s resilience—and seeing so many other children like him hidden away due to fear and misunderstanding—Najma realized that silence was the greatest enemy of progress. Inspired by his courage, she launched #DontHideMe to be a voice for the voiceless, transforming her personal experience into a national mission to move children from the shadows of neglect into a life of dignity, opportunity, and celebration.

The Problem: Confronting the Crisis of Invisibility

In many parts of Kenya, particularly in the North Eastern regions, a “Crisis of Invisibility” persists. Deep-seated cultural stigmas often lead families to view developmental disabilities as a “curse” or a source of communal shame.

Enforced Isolation:

In regions like Mandera and Wajir, over 70% of children with disabilities are kept indoors—hidden behind mud walls and denied the right to play, learn, or socialize.

Legal Non-Existence:

Because they are hidden, many of these children lack birth certificates. Without a legal identity, they cannot access government support, health insurance (SHA), or education.

Medical Abandonment:

Due to a lack of specialized facilities and pervasive poverty, thousands of children suffer from manageable conditions like cerebral palsy or malnutrition without ever seeing a therapist or doctor.

Systemic Support:

The government prioritizes the rights of these children by establishing therapy centers in every sub-county and ensuring special needs schools are centers of excellence.

Our Vision: A Future of Total Inclusion

We envision a society where every child with a disability is visible, counted, and celebrated. We strive for a Kenya where:

Dignity is Universal:

Respectful language and inclusive attitudes replace the stigma of the past.

Mission

To dismantle the walls of isolation, stigma, and neglect that marginalize thousands of vulnerable children, asserting their fundamental right to dignity and opportunity.

Vision

A society where every child with a disability is visible, counted, and supported by a government that prioritizes their rights.
